Podiatrists are uniquely trained to treat the foot and ankle. They can specialize in many fields, including surgery, sports medicine, wound care, pediatric care, and diabetic care. Like other specialists, they go through many years of training. Podiatric physicians complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school and three years in hospital residency training. Podiatrists may also choose to earn board certification from the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery or the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.
